How do you win Drillers?
The player with the most points at the end of the game wins. Points come from mined mine tiles, collected minerals (from 2 points for silver to 6 for ruby), milestones, and 1 point for every 5 credits left over. You lose points if the mech stays underground and for negative cards in your deck. (Final Score and Tiebreaker)
What does a turn look like?
Three phases. In Operations you play cards by paying fuel to move, drill, collect, and excavate. If you end on the surface you do the Ascent: sell, buy, repair, upgrade, and refuel. Finally Maintenance: keep the cards you want by paying, discard, and draw 3. (Game Overview and Objectives)
How long does a turn take, do I have to wait long for others?
The rulebook doesn't specify times. From the rules you can tell that turns are sequential and involve many micro-choices about fuel, movements, and drills; turns on the surface, with selling and buying, are the longest. It helps that you always see the first card of your deck, so you can plan while you wait. (Phase 1: Operations – the cards)
When does the game end?
When someone fills their advancement track, that is when their tiles reach the minerals in the overflow zone (or the end of the dashboard if they don't have any). They take 18 final milestone points, the other players play one last turn, and whoever triggered it doesn't play yet. (End of Game: the mine collapses)
What if we tie?
Whoever has more credits left wins. If you're still tied, whoever has more fuel in the tank wins. (Final Score and Tiebreaker)
What changes with two players?
The rules are the same; only the starting resources change: the first player gets 2 credits and 3 cards, the second gets 4 credits and 4 cards. From the rules you can infer that the mine is less contested and the milestones become a head-to-head race. (Setup: Your Mech)
Can you play solo?
Yes, there's a solo mode against a corporate bot with 4 difficulty levels, on the boards printed on the back of the dashboards. The bot flips a card to decide how many drills to use, follows a priority list, and when ascending discards cards from the shops. To win you need to score more points than it. (Solo Mode: Setup and Overview)
How much luck is there?
A medium amount. You draw from your shuffled deck and cards from the shops and deep levels come out randomly. But you always see the first card of your deck, you can keep cards, thin your deck with repairs, and refresh a shop once per game, so you control quite a lot. (Phase 1: Operations – the cards)
Is there interaction or does everyone play on their own?
There are no direct attacks, but minerals, corridors, and shops are shared: if you take the sapphire, the other player won't find it anymore. Milestones go to whoever reaches them first and whoever closes the game imposes one last turn on everyone. It's indirect but concrete interaction. Is it replayable, what changes from one game to another?
The order of the corridor tiles changes, the level cards (only some of the 9 deep ones come out) and the cards in the 4 shops, including the 2 advanced ones hidden under level 4. So every game has different levels, minerals, and purchases. (Setup: The Mine)
Do the mechs have different powers?
No: according to the rulebook the 4 mechs (Headmaster, Railbreaker, Splash, Mayday) only differ as miniature and color. Everyone starts with the same deck and the same dashboard; whoever plays after only receives more starting credits or cards. (Setup: Your Mech)
How much table space is needed?
The rulebook doesn't say. From the setup you can tell that you need the long mine board, the shop with 4 decks and card columns, and for each player a wide dashboard with deck holder and play area. I'd estimate about 90×120 cm with four players. (Setup: The Surface and the Shops)
What's in the box?
Mine board, shop in 2 pieces, 66 cards, 12 level cards, 33 mine tiles (29 corridors and 4 barriers), 43 credits, 105 minerals in 5 types, and 4 milestones. For each of the 4 colors there are a miniature, 8 starting cards, dashboard, limiters, indicators, 3 drones, refresh tile, and deck holder. (Components)
What is fuel for?
It's the currency of Operations: you pay fuel for the main effect of cards and for basic functions (3 for a move, 4 for a drill). You recover it by playing cards for fuel, taking damage once per turn (+3), or refueling on the surface. It never exceeds the limit, which you can raise by paying. (Phase 1: Operations – Basic Functions and Exhausting Tiles)
Why do I have to ascend to the surface?
Only on the surface can you sell minerals, buy cards, repair, upgrade, and refuel; if you end Operations underground you skip all of this. At the end of the game, a mech in the depths loses points. Drones let you sell a mineral or buy a card even underground. (Phase 2: Ascending to the Surface – Selling Minerals)
How does the mineral market work?
Each mineral goes in its column, from the bottom, and you take the credits from the space you cover. If the column is full it goes into the overflow zone and gives you the amount shown above the column (gold 0, sapphire 4). Each mineral, sold or not, is worth points at the end of the game. (Phase 2: Ascending to the Surface – Selling Minerals)
What's the most confusing rule?
In my opinion the overflow zone. Minerals that end up there (for full columns or from solid fuel) shorten your advancement track, so they bring the end of the game closer. The end triggers when the excavated tiles meet those cubes, not at a fixed number. (End of Game: the mine collapses)
What are mine tiles and what does it mean to exhaust them?
They are the corridors and barriers you dig: they go in your track and are worth the points in the top right. You can exhaust them, that is use the effect printed at the bottom (credits, batteries, and more) and flip them, but then they're worth less. (Phase 1: Operations – Basic Functions and Exhausting Tiles)
How do you break down a barrier?
You must be on the level just above it and spend as many drills as the number on the barrier. You put it in your track, reveal the level card below, and resolve the reveal effects, then the mech moves down for free to the new level. Opening level 4 also expands the advanced shop. What do drones do?
You have 3, one active at the start. During Operations you flip one to sell a mineral or buy a card without returning to the surface. Some cards reactivate them. (Phase 1: Operations – Drones)
What are Damage cards and how do I get rid of them?
You start with 1 Damage in your deck and gain others, for example using the basic function to get 3 fuel. You only get rid of them by repairing on the surface: 5 credits, once per ascent. You can also repair starting cards, which often have negative points. (Phase 2: Ascending to the Surface – Repair, Discard, Upgrade)
Can I keep cards in hand for the next turn?
Yes: one is free, each additional one costs 1 fuel in Maintenance. You always draw 3 cards anyway, no matter what you've kept. On the surface you can also discard cards from your hand for 2 credits each. (Phase 3: Maintenance)
What are advanced cards and permanents?
Advanced cards also cost a battery, which you pay by exhausting a mine tile with that symbol; their shop goes from 2 to 4 cards when level 4 opens. Permanents don't go into your deck: they stay next to your dashboard and you use them once in every Operations phase. (Phase 2: Ascending to the Surface – Buying Cards, Shop Refresh, Refuel)
What do level cards do?
They give mandatory and permanent effects to their level: on reveal, when you excavate a corridor there, when you collect a mineral there, or if you end Operations on that level. They apply to all players for the rest of the game (in solo mode the bot ignores them). (Going Deeper: Level Cards)
How do milestones work?
On the track there are 3 lines: whoever covers one first takes the points token, the others immediately receive the credits or cards printed above it.
