The FroGames Card
The press attacks you. Cops shoot at you. Mutants await you. And you are a sixty-year-old man who should never have put the mask back on.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
The last Gotham of a Knight who shouldn't have returned
Designed by Daryl Andrews and Morgan Dontanville, with illustrations by Arnaud Boudoiron, this game brings Frank Miller's 1986 graphic novel back to the tabletop. Not the olympic Batman of the Justice League: a sixty-year-old man who re-emerges from ten years of retirement to discover an even more rotten Gotham, where cops shoot at him, the media portrays him as a crazed vigilante, and the Mutants control the streets.
You play Batman against Two-Face, Billy Berserk, Joker and, in the finale, Superman himself. Each mission is an escalation of violence and attrition: you don't level up, you wear down. You can play them as self-contained scenarios or as an integrated campaign where injuries and losses carry over from one act to the next. The system uses custom dice, conflict cards and an antagonist deck that manages enemies and narrative beats without the need for an app.

First read: the game captures the tone of the graphic novel — attrition, tough choices, no superpowers. We will update this card after full playthroughs.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – The Game
The game is primarily designed for solo play: each mission uses an antagonist deck that manages enemies, narrative events, and scenario progression without the need for a human opponent. There is a 1-2 player cooperative mode, but the experience is designed to make you embody a Batman against all odds.
What's in the box
Components for the final battle
Batman miniature
A paintable miniature representing the aging Dark Knight. On the board, he moves between Gotham's quadrants to confront threats and complete objectives.
Custom dice
Set of dice with dedicated icons for resolving conflicts. Symbols for attack, defense, critical wounds: roll, count results, face the consequences.
Antagonist decks
Each mission has its own deck: Mutants, Joker, Superman. The cards dictate enemy moves, narrative events, and win/loss conditions.
Mission sheets
Four self-contained scenarios plus setup for the full campaign. Each sheet includes objectives, initial setup, and narrative beats from the graphic novel.
🎲How to PlayThe rules in four steps▼
How to Play
The flow of each turn
Four linear phases: activate, react, suffer, advance.
Move your miniature, play cards from your hand to attack enemies or complete objectives. Spend resources, roll dice if necessary.
Reveal a card from the antagonist deck. Attacks enemies, events, narrative complications. React with defense cards or accept the damage.
Count inflicted and sustained wounds. Update the Batman sheet: each permanent damage reduces future options. Discard exhausted cards.
Draw up to your hand limit. If the antagonist deck is empty or you have completed the objective, the mission ends. Otherwise: next turn.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Mission Setup
Choose the scenario: Mutants, Two-Face, Joker, or Superman. Prepare the antagonist deck, place the miniature, read the narrative prologue on the sheet. The table is silent: you already know it's going to end badly.
First Conflicts
Reveal the first antagonist card. Enemy attacks, events that complicate the board. Roll dice, spend cards from your hand to mitigate. The first permanent damage arrives sooner than you thought.
Escalation
The antagonist deck advances. Each card worsens the situation: enemy reinforcements, wounds that don't heal, secondary objectives that close. You start sacrificing important cards just to survive the turn.
The Final Showdown
The mission boss appears. Joker, Superman, whoever it may be. The dice decide if you can inflict enough damage before your deck runs out. A single bad roll can end everything.
Epilogue
If you win, read the narrative epilogue. If you play in campaign mode, you note wounds and losses on the sheet: you'll carry them into the next mission. If you lost, you restart or accept that this Batman didn't make it.

How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Each mission has specific objectives and an relentless timer.
Victory
- Complete the main mission objective (defeat the boss, rescue hostages, etc.)
- Survive the entire antagonist deck without running out of your own deck or dying
- In campaign mode: carry wounds to the next mission, but consider it a win
Defeat
- Batman accumulates wounds up to the KO threshold indicated on the mission sheet
- The Batman deck runs out before completing the objective
- Fail a critical condition imposed by the antagonist card (e.g., too many civilian deaths)
The only board game where you don't want to get stronger: you just want to reach the end before falling apart.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – The Game
What mechanics does Batman: The Dark Knight Returns use?
Conflict resolution via custom dice and cards, hand management, attrition system without leveling, official solo/solitaire with antagonist deck managing enemies. Optional 1-2 player cooperative mode.
Can I play the missions in any order, or do I have to follow the campaign?
You can play each mission as a standalone scenario without consequences. Or you can play the full campaign: in that case, wounds, lost cards, and narrative choices carry over from one mission to the next, increasing the final difficulty.
How significant is the luck factor?
Custom dice resolve conflicts, and some results are critical. You can mitigate with cards, but not nullify: a terrible roll at the wrong moment can end the game. If you seek total control, this system will frustrate you.
Do I need to know Frank Miller's graphic novel to play?
No, the rules are self-contained. But the game reprises narrative arcs, dialogues, and iconic scenes from the graphic novel: if you know it, the experience is much more immersive. Without that background, it remains a good dark superhero solitaire game.
Is it available in Italian?
This edition is in English: cards, rulebook, and narrative texts. The mechanics are relatively simple (dice and symbols), but the flavor texts are dense and require reading.
The people behind the game
Who invented it, who designed it, who publishes it — and what else they've done.
